Hymn of the Day

(words: Joe Terrell, tune: "There is a Fountain Filled with Blood p222.)

As on the cross of Christ I thought,

It seemed I heard one cry,

"Is all this nothing in your eyes,

You who this day pass by?

“Is not such suff'ring greater than,

That which you've seen before?

‘And was there ever any man,

Who grieved or suffered more?"

I looked again, and what I saw,

I cannot fully tell;

It seemed within His very bones,

There raged the fire of hell.

“What caused your grief?”

I asked the man,

“What crimes could you have done?

“That God, Jehovah, struck you down,

And left you all alone?”

His answer cut my heart like steel,

And left me void of breath;

“‘Tis for your sins this pain I feel,

“For you I go to death!

“Your soul, before my Father's throne,

“Could find no place to hide.

“This is the way God can be just,

“And you be justified.”

Jehovah's mercies never fail,

Each morning they are new;

Great is His faithfulness and love,

Therefore, we're not consumed!

Jehovah God, in Christ the Son,

Shall all my portion be,

My soul shall, therefore, wait for Him,

And live eternally.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR?

Many things may come to our mind, but we are told in Philippians 4:6, “Let your moderation be known to all men.”  This is not about moderation in eating or drinking.  The word means gentle forbearance, not insisting on the letter of the law: Humaneness.  Moderation is the ability to see things from another point of view.  It is one of the words used to describe the wisdom that is from above in James 3:17, “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle (moderate), and easy to be entreated, full of mercy.”  This is what we want men to see in us!  The wisdom that is first pure, according to Truth, then peaceable, gentle, and approachable.  Will men see that in me?  -Todd Nibert

However men may wrestle and quibble with the Scriptures, one thing is certain:  The atonement is no failure!  God will not allow that precious and costly sacrifice to fail in accomplishing completely that which it was designed to effect. Not a drop of that Holy Blood was shed in vain.  In the last great day, there shall stand forth no disappointed and defeated Saviour, but One Who “shall see the travail of His soul and shall be satisfied.”  -Arthur W. Pink

I remember that Mr. Matthew Wilkes once preached from the text, "Ye are our epistle written in our hearts,... written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God." He compared the preacher to a pen, and said that some pens needed mending now and then, and that all pens, however good they were, must be dipped in the ink if they were to do any writing at all; and he added, "You ought to pray all the more for your preacher when he does not write well, 'Lord, dip him in the ink; give him more of the unction of the Holy Spirit, and then his word will have power over the hearts of men!" -Charles H. Spurgeon

By God’s all-wise appointment, our assemblies are the life, the food, and the nourishment of our souls.  It is the main way whereby we publicly identify with Christ and His Gospel.  We evidence our love for Christ by our loyalty and support of one another in opposition to all false worship.  Many things will rise up in competition to the diligent attendance of our assemblies.  We must recognize and refuse to give in to anything that is opposed to what Christ commands.  The total falling away of a graceless professor always begins with this neglect - the disassociation with God’s people (Hebrews 10:25).    – John Owens

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

-Hebrews 13:8

Was Christ a sufficient Savior for a sinner like you in times past? Was His righteousness sufficient to justify you, His sacrifice sufficient to atone for you, and His blood sufficient to redeem you? Why, then do you have doubts that anything is now different or fear that, in time to come, it shall be different? If, at the present time, your mind is troubled concerning your eternal welfare, you can be certain that it is not because Christ has changed in any way. Rather, your flesh or the enemy of your soul has interjected something of your own works into view. Maybe some pet sin has once again brought you down, or maybe the memory of past failures has caused you to spiral into a quagmire of doubt. “You have not changed!” whispers the accusing voice.  Answer that voice with boldness, “And neither has my Savior, you wretched liar! Get behind me, accuser, for you bring up the things of men, not the things of God!” There is nothing about us that is ever to be the object of our gaze, either at the beginning of our salvation, the end of our salvation, or any point in between. Our look is always to Christ, yesterday, today, and forever!  -Joe

Certain preachers hang up the dead black crow of their own morbid experience to scare away poor sinners from coming to simple faith in Jesus, but the Lord has no scarecrows in his garden. Do but come, thou blackest of sinners, and He will receive thee. The strangest bird, with speckled wing, may freely gather what mercy gives. Whatever is preached in the Gospel as the object of faith, everyone that believes may have; whatever is promised to repentance, everyone that repents may have; and whatever is promised to coming to Christ, everyone that comes to Christ shall have. -Charles H. Spurgeon
