Hymn of the Day

(tune: Come Christians Join to Sing, (altered) p.55)

When this passing world is done,

When has sunk yon glaring sun,

When we stand with Christ on high,

Looking o’er life’s history,

Then, Lord, shall I fully know—

Not till then—how much I owe.

When I hear the wicked call,

On the rocks and hills to fall,

When I see them start and shrink,

On the fiery deluge brink,

Then, Lord, shall I fully know—

Not till then—how much I owe.

When I stand before the throne,

Dressed in beauty not my own,

When I see Thee as Thou art,

Love Thee with unsinning heart,

Then Lord, shall I fully know—

Not till then—how much I owe.

When the praise of Heav’n I hear,

Loud as thunders to the ear,

Loud as many waters’ noise,

Sweet as harp’s melodious voice,

Then, Lord, shall I fully know—

Not till then—how much I owe.

Even on earth, as through a glass,

Darkly, let Thy glory pass,

Make forgiveness feel so sweet,

Make Thy Spirit’s help so meet,

Even on earth, Lord, make me know,

Something of how much I owe.

Chosen not for good in me,

Wakened up from wrath to flee,

Hidden in the Savior’s side,

By the Spirit sanctified,

Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,

By my love, how much I owe.

Time teaches even unbelieving people something of the vanity of this life. Therefore, the unbelieving world must have some sense of despair as this life draws near to its end. But grace teaches this truth to God’s people with the added dimension that this life is vanity only if we attempt to live it apart from Christ. Added to this that when this life is over, we enter another life that shall never end. This present life can be tough, and it tends to get tougher as time takes away more and more of the things in which we once found such joy. But for us who believe, despair need never be our reaction. Instead, we are confident of good things to come through our Lord Jesus Christ – things that cannot be taken away!  -Joe

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the

excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord...

-Philippians 3:8

The knowledge Paul speaks of is much more than a head knowledge. Paul is talking about an experimental knowledge. It is the same thing Jesus Christ said is life eternal in John 17 – “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” It is one thing to know the doctrine of redemption, it is an entirely different thing to know that One who is the Redeemer. To know the truths of salvation is not the same thing as knowing the Savior, Himself.

This is the one issue that is vital. It is essential that we know what Christ has done, but you may know all about his work and not know him. We must know him, whom to know is life eternal. The knowledge of Jesus Christ is far superior to the knowledge of everything else. Paul knew whom he had believed; he knew Christ for himself; he knew his personal interest in him. What does it matter how much I may know about the Word of God if I don’t know about God the eternal Word?

Thank God for that precious gift of faith by which Jesus Christ is revealed to and made real to needy sinners!  -Larry Criss

We can never determine whether or not someone is saved by what they do or do not do. Determining salvation based on the deeds of the law is legalistic. We know that no one is saved by their obedience to any part of the law. Judging salvation based on what someone does or does not do is cruel because it puts them under law not under grace.

The sole determining factor in salvation is faith in Christ. The question is not whether or not you have sin in your life. Of course, you have sin in your life! The only question is do you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you trust Christ to be everything it takes to save you, without any help from you? If your answer to that question is yes, then Christ has saved you and revealed himself to you and in you.     -Frank Tate

And God said unto Moses,

I AM THAT I AM:

and he said,

Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,

I AM hath sent me unto you.

-Exodus3:14

Who is this that speaks from the burning bush upon the mountain? It is the very same person that speaks throughout the gospel writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It certainly is no mistake that the Lord Jesus Christ told the Pharisees that, "Before Abraham was I am” (John 8:56). Our blessed Saviour did not have His beginning at Bethlehem, He is the everlasting God. Yes, He was manifested in the flesh as a real man in time (1Timothy 3:16). However, let us never forget that He, at no time, stopped being God (John1:14). Someone has put it, "He remained what He was (Almighty God) and He became what He was not (flesh)." Especially through the gospel recorded in John, our Lord identifies Himself as the "I AM." Here are several Scriptures to think upon this week.

1). I AM the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6:35).

2). Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I AM the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12).

3). I AM the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture" (John 10:9).

4). I AM the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

5). Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live" (John 11:25).

6). Jesus saith unto him, I AM the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).

7). I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman" (John 15:1).

As you can easily see from meditating upon these scriptures that our Lord Jesus Christ is made unto us all that we need now and eternally. Now you might ask, is it really that important that I trust Christ as God and believe Him alone as all my salvation? Yes! And here is the reason why! "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM, ye shall die in your sins" (John 8:24).   -Tom Harding
